We all know that come the end of November and all of December you can’t escape seeing gift guides in almost every magazine and weekend newspaper.
Savvy PR people know that you need to provide a great photo and story often months in advance to be considered for these features.
But Christmas is just one time of the year when the media go mad with gift giving ideas. There’s also Mother’s Day and just around the corner is Father’s Day, this year on 1 September.
Socks and jocks just don’t cut it anymore. The media are constantly looking for the unusual or quirky gift, whether it is something you can wrap or something you can’t, such as a flight in a jet aircraft doing aerobatics and experiencing zero Gs.
To help you plan where you are going to pitch your product or service to take advantage of features and supplements, check the editorial calendars of magazines, trade journals and newspapers. In addition to the obvious festive and holiday dates, you’ll find the beginning of each season is great for fashion features and spring in particular is where you can pitch anything to do with racing.
Also check for major exhibitions and other events that are being held and see which media will be covering them.
Just remember that you need to ensure material is provided to the person responsible for the feature well in advance of the cover date. As one editor said to me today as I thanked him for running our media release as their lead story, “timing is everything” and "having good pics".
With the monthly glossies, this can be three months. If that’s where you want to be, then submitting a product for Christmas means you should start preparing now. On your To Do list should be:
* Research and select publications
* Select your product/s to be promoted
* Take professional photographs with/without Christmas decorations
* Write a short piece on the product and include all the relevant details
* Have a conversation with the person in charge of the feature
* Provide the material with/without a product sample
This will help get your product get noticed by the media.
