I don’t expect there would be one person who reads my blogs who hasn’t listened to a podcast.
But have you thought of including this medium in your PR strategy and PR program?
Podcast producers have to get their material from somewhere and there are a lot of experts and interesting people who can fill this need as a guest on their show.
Some podcasts are published daily, some weekly, some less frequently but as part of a client PR program it’s one of the PR consultant’s role to find suitable podcasts where our clients voices can be heard.
The more frequent the podcast the more content they need.
Many businesses believe television may be more valuable to them, but podcasting is a PR platform that is only going to continue to grow because it is in demand — great demand.
Podcasts invariably give their guests more time and attention than a television segment would, which means you have greater opportunity to communicate your key messages and brand story.
Another reason why I believe that podcasts are rising to the top of the media-of-choice ladder is that the audience wants to be there. For me, ABC RN is my go-to podcast directory and when I listen to a show, I’m usually 100% attentive. (I acknowledge most shows are radio programs and are also available on demand.) In contrast, if I have the TV news on, I may be in and out of the lounge and not totally connected with it.
In terms of numbers and reach, I’ve read that:
* 57 million Americans listen to podcasts every month
* Australia is the fourth largest consumer of podcasts in the world (according to Mamamia)
* 54% of users bought something after hearing about it on a podcast
* The reach of a single podcast can be larger than a TV audience
So how do you get to be a guest or interviewed on a podcast?
It’s much the same process as getting into traditional media. Do your research, make sure it is totally relevant to them and write your pitch in a way that will capture their attention.
Here are a few directories of podcasts that you can explore:
