Following on from developing your Vision, Mission and Values statements last month, here I want to help you develop the best slogan or tagline for your business.
If you don’t have one, you should look at doing so because it is this statement that can separate your company from your competitors.
Think of your tagline as shorthand for what you do and how you do it. Here are some examples of ones that I think are clever and help communicate what the company does.
I’m sure you would all be familiar with these. For WMC Public Relations, when we rebranded a few years ago, we decided on Strategy. Action. Results. Because that’s what we do.
The first step in the process is to think of a key benefit. What is it that differentiates your product or brand from your competitors while also highlighting your mission and values.
Many company names don’t give an adequate description of what they do so a tagline is even more important in these instances.
Like your company name and logo, a tagline is part of your business identity and is often a first impression for potential customers. Hence, it wants to attract attention and make a strong statement.
If you have many different areas to your business, isolate one key offering where you have an advantage in the market and focus on this to create your tagline.
While I would recommend that your tagline is short, sometimes the best ones aren’t always that brief. Being effective is more important than brevity but ideally you want both.

When you have a shortlist of taglines, check on the internet to make sure no-one is already using it. You may also want to look at getting your slogan trademarked.
Once you have your tagline, a good graphic designer will advise if it can be incorporated into your existing logo. If not, maybe some minor adjustments may be needed or perhaps your logo needs a complete refresh so both the logo and tagline blend well together.
